since ZX spectrum ...
im starting to know some of the usual posters here , witch is good
its time to say how old we are in this game world.
im from the audio tapes games ... lol , after that , 8086 3 mhz with no harddrive , and dig dug as the only game.
and then you know , eye of the beholder , magic the gathering , mist , lary suit larry , space quest , ..... until today , playing ... halflife2 death match , batle field 2 , guildwars , roler coster tycon 3 , and anything else cool that comes in my way ...
i can consider my selfe as a computer games nerd .

all this to say im 30 years old , i have a job , i will always play computer games , the same way i will always love girls , for the rest of my life.
this thread comes out of the 12 year old thread. kid if they insult you for being 12 years old , thats becose they are the imature ones.
i really hate the elite wanna be players : " dont take the kid " , " dont take low level " ... wth ... its just a game , its not a job , you dont get payed if you win , you just have fun , or dont ...
this is all a part of breaking the online tabus , online games are new , people still have to evolve in the way of socializing , and guildwars is entering new areas , since is mixing people all around the world in the same bag ...

First computer game I ever played was hangman on a tandy we used to own, after that I got hold of Super Mario Go Fish or something like that, basically just played pixelated go fish with Mario. Game I remember most was to put it simply, Doom. Loved it. Then just played through the Doom games, the Quake games, I also used to do some text RPGs, but that didn't last long. Basically just evolved from Hangman. And I definately kicked Mario's ass at go fish. So how many years? I don't really have any idea, someone else do the math.

My first actual machine with a "game" on it was an old garage sale-acquired Digital Equipment corporation behemoth that had chess and checkers on it.

In conceiving the Professional 300 series, DEC designers decided that new machines must be able to perform several tasks at once, apply the same user interface, communicate efficiently and use the same software as Digital's popular microcomputers.

These personal computers were really desktop-sized versions of the PDP-11, one of Digital's popular minicomputer. Both models shared the PDP-11 instruction set and memory management. Both had an operating system based on Digital's RSX-11M+. For the user, this meant that software applications developped for more than 500,000 PDP-11 and VAX systems were candidat for easy migration to a desktop personal computer.

The members of DEC 300 Pro series were the 325 (two 5.25" disk drives, 400 KB each, and 1 expansion slot), the 350 (one 5.25" disk drive, 10 MB hard disk and 5 expansion slots) and the 380.
The 325 and 350 used the F-11 CPU running at 13.33 MHz (the external clock actually ran at 26.66 MHz). The 380 used the J-11 CPU

About the number of colours: the three planes gave 8 colors at one time by referencing an 8 entry palette.Each entry in the palette could be programmed for one of 256 colors (by setting RGB values).

The internal card cage had space for up to 6 options total, and the base 350 system with EBO used four. The base 380 system used two. A Z80 card was available and allowed to use CP/M as the OS.

The operating systems which ran on it were P/OS (which was a variation of RSX), RT-11 and a variation of Unix called Venix. P/OS and Venix are freely available nowadays. RT-11 is still licensed software and is still being developed and maintained.

These systems were originally sold as standalone units, but were later incorporated into the VAX 8000 series as the system “Console”...

I started out on a Radio Shack TRS80 Model 3 (my uncle owned the local franchise). I can't remember all the names, but mostly I played games that came on a 5 1/4 floppy or my dad and brother programmed from a computer magazine. Most of them were Atari and arcade knock-offs.

When the Trash80 died, we didn't have a computer in the house for a long while and I kind of played games off and on where I could find them, usually at friend's houses on their Atari and later, Nintendo.

I met my husband in college and he introduced me to computers again. I didn't play the games that much then, but I spent hours watching him and friends play DOOM deathmatches. Since then, it's been whatever I figure I will like and can enjoy with my friends.

So, in a nutshell, it was Pole Position (at the arcade), Space Invaders, Combat, Mario, Vegas-themed games, anything by Trilobyte, and then into RPG's and strategy games. Currently, I'm playing GW (of course) and Civilization III.

The first game I can remember playing is Digger by Windmill Software. The first computer I can remember playing on was a Multitech MFP-PC (after much digging around the Net I finally found out the name of the PC I used to play on as a kid lol). Classic games that I played on this were:

- Digger
- Paratrooper
- Frogger
- Sierra On-Line Championship Boxing
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.0
- Microsoft Decathlon

Oh and how long have I been playing games? At the very least 15 years (i.e. since I was 8).

I have hazy recollections of myself staring at arcade machines when I was a really small kid. The first time I had a joystick in my fingers should be about twenty years ago, when I was barely old enough to read. I thin kit was Space Invaders or Galaga or some such, played on one of these table-ish arcade machines where you looked down at the screen. That must have been twenty years ago...

I also remember playing games on another kid's Atari and a friend's Sega Master System. Got my first computer (the one and only C64 from Commodore, may they rest in peace) at age 11 (some 16 years ago).

Have been hooked ever since...

So much for all the people who told me, that I should stop playing games, that I was too old for that stuff and that I should concentrate on my studies, so that I could get a proper job, because you won't get far in life if you don't start acting grown up and quit playing, young man!

Like any good OLD gamer I started out on Board Games. The 3M Bookself Series, Risk, Chess, Gettysburg, etc.

Then in 1980 a room mate of mine had a Tandy II computer with a cassette drive. I think the game was called Habarabbi (sp). A text base game that made Zork seem like a 3D game. However, I was hooked on computers then. I moved up to a Intellevision game system in 1981-82. Spent way too much money on games for that. Then of course I then moved up to the Commodore 64. One of the best game computers ever. It totally blew away anything a PC clone could dish out. I enjoyed games like Red Storm Rising, Stealth Fighter, Lords of Conquest, Ace of Aces ( a two player game, one would fly the plane the other would use the Function keys and play the back seat gunner...that was pure FUN)

Now of course I enjoy good graphic games. The only Sports game I ever enjoyed is NHL 2001. The best of that series. I still mainly love Stategy War Games though. Civilization series is still the best over all game out there. I like the turn-base aspect of it. I can stop, walk away, think of my next move, and so on.

I am with Neoteo here I started in the days of audio cassettes Tandy II. Used to play pong, and there was a text based RPG game the name slips my mind now but it was like present day Choice in the Unix world. Next was the Commodore 64, then I had the IBM clone self built no hard drive simply 5.25 floppies. But then I evolved to what I think was the best gaming computer of its day Amiga. This machine had an internal hard drive and you used software to boot into a GUI that looked much like windows 3.11 can you say another Microsoft theft. The Amiga though was unbelievable for its time it. Played a series of games the one that comes to mind is a game called Zac MacCraken. We'll I evolved back into the IBM world and the a typical games that everyone knows and loves 3D Wolfenstein, Doom, etc...

I must clarify here that I never had problems with being social as I had several fine girlfriends, had many friends, and participated in school athletics. I have a job as a programmer, have a beautiful wife, a great well behaved 5yr son, and a wonderful house in Florida. Video Games rot your brain I think NOT!

The first comp I ever played on was a BBC I think. One of my friends at primary school had one and we also had 2 at school. I always played a game called grannies garden, which was a semi educational puzzle game.

After that it was a ZX spectrum, which was unearthed from the depths of a long abandoned cupboard. Along with the spectrum were a couple of games including Jet Set Willy, Jetpack and that game where you have to bounce a ball into coloured bricks to remove them. I brought several dizzy games for about £1.99 which ultimately didn't work. Ahh those were the days, those joyous 5 minute loading times.

Then I moved on to the Amiga and Atari ST, neither of which I owned. I spent time on other peoples comps. Superfrog and Pang and a corrupted version of streetfighter in which Blanca apperared a huge fuzzy block were the games of choice then.

I had a number of consoles after that including an Atari 2600, which as I recall was 2-bit. I also had a megadrive, which me, my brother and my sister had for a number of years.

Eventaully me and my brother convinced my mum that we needed a PC. Thats when I discovered Command and Conquer: Red Alert. I borroweed the game off a friend and he eventually gave it to me. After that it was Starcraft, Quake, Duke Nuke Em and Unreal Tournament, which I played in the 6th form common room. Had lots of fun playing winner stays on. Naturally I always stayed on.

So all in all I've probably been playing games since I was about 7, so since about 1989.

I don't remember the names of most of the games I played when I was a kid...but one of the first was Captain Comic. Boy, was that a weird game... I tried it out again a couple of years ago and still got stuck at the same place I always did!!! Strange that I seemed to know exactly where everything was (anyone else notice this?). Computer game stuff just gets branded into my brain. With all the games I've played extensively I remember waaay too much. Probably why my real-life memory sucks.

Anyway, I can trace back from when I got a Nintendo (I'll only mention what I played the most). Played the Super Mario games, various SNES games, then it was C&C and Red Alert once there was a good spec PC available, Colonization I loved. From then half-life, cs, diablo2+expansion, hl2, and now Guildwars :P

The earliest game I can remember playing was on an HP 75C.

See that slot with the arrow in the lower right? That's how you installed programs. The programs were stored on 12" long (guessing here, I was way young) magnetic strips that you fed into the slot with the arrow and pulled out the other end. Pull the strip too slow or too fast and you would be prompted to try again.

I think the game was a version of Adventure, a text adventure (the first text adventure), or more commonly known now-a-days as interactive fiction. I had to feed 15-20 magnetic strips through the computer every time I wanted to play it. And then I played them on a single-line display. Those were the days.

After that, I recall a graphical dungeon romp on another HP computer (with a touchscreen), playing games on a Heathkit computer, an Atari 2600 (my first console), the Commodore 64, and then finally a PC as we know them today, except much, much slower and much, much more expensive. It's been PCs and occasional consoles ever since.

I'll have to see if I can find any info on that touchscreen dungeon-hack.

Its sad but true. I am able to recall computer game details, but not real life details. My virtual memory is so much better than my real life memory.

Let see, earlies game I can remember playing was frogger on Atari. First RPG was Legend of Dragoon on PSX. Kinda annoying but satisfying nonetheless.

in spectrum times i remember spending more time in the basic editor then playing the games ... for me the games were hard .. the basic was just copy from a book and then play with values , make toons with lines and circles .. lol .. i was very young .. im guessing 6 or 7

well, lets see, basically my parents only let me get educational stuff, like Reader Rabbit, etc, until i was 9 or 10, but I got around it. I saw an rpg called TaskMaker at a friends house, so I made a (bad) clone of it in QBASIC in 1997. First in a text based map, then I basically "invented" (well not really, but I had personally never heard of it) what people have told me is "vector graphics." Idk, i just noticed it draws lines faster than pixels. Stupid 80x80 arrays take up too much memory when you just have 4mb on a 386x25DX. Never did switch over to oop. Anyway, that turned out fun, so I got into RPG's. And I know how hard it is for Anet to balance stuff. I always ended up with one way that shouldn't have been easier, but was, to beat my games. :-( Btw, I'm 18 now.
